Shipping & "Handling"

I hate it when a company charges me some outrageous fee for "handling".  It's simply dishonest for a store to charge you for the priviledge of actually giving you the product that you just bought.  So, we don't do it.  We use some UPS-supplied module to help us calculate your shipping charges.  It will sometimes give you a  number that makes no sense.  When that happens, give us a call so that we can straighten it out.

SAFETY WARNINGS - READ BEFORE USING YOUR TACTILITE

The .50 BMG cartridge has an Absolute Maximum Effective Range, which is a measure of the cartridge’s area of potential lethality, of over 2 miles.  Always use extreme caution when firing any .50 BMG cartridge.  Prior to each and every use, inspect the firearms for signs of visible damage- do not fire any gun that shows even the slightest sign of damage.

Always follow the NRA Rules for Gun Safety:

1.    ALWAYS keep the gun pointed in a safe direction. This is the primary rule of gun safety. A safe direction means that the gun is pointed so that even if it were to go off it would not cause injury or damage. The key to this rule is to control where the muzzle or front end of the barrel is pointed at all times. Common sense dictates the safest direction, depending on different circumstances.

2.    ALWAYS keep your finger off the trigger until ready to shoot. When holding a gun, do not rest your finger on the trigger. Until you are actually ready to fire, do not touch the trigger.

3.    ALWAYS keep the gun unloaded until ready to use. Whenever you pick up a gun, immediately engage or confirm the engagement of the safety device, and open the action and look into the chamber, which should be clear of ammunition. If you do not know how to open the action or inspect the chamber, leave the gun alone and get help from someone who does.  If you are uncertain whether a gun is loaded, act as though it is, and follow rules #1 and #2 at all times.

4.    ALWAYS know your target and what is beyond. Be absolutely sure you have identified your target beyond any doubt. Equally important, be aware of the area for 3000 yards beyond your target. This means observing your prospective area of fire before you shoot. When shooting in areas with lots of rock, water or other potentially deflecting items, be aware of ricochet risk and make sure that no people are within at least 6000 yards of your target. Never fire in a direction in which there are people or any other potential for mishap. Think first. Shoot second.

5.    ALWAYS know how to use the gun safely. Before handling a gun, learn how it operates. Know its basic parts, how to safely open and close the action and remove any ammunition from the gun or magazine. Remember, a gun's mechanical safety device is never foolproof. Nothing can ever replace safe gun handling.

6.    ALWAYS be sure the gun is safe to operate. Just like other tools, guns need regular maintenance to remain operable. Regular cleaning and proper storage are a part of the gun's general upkeep. If there is any question concerning a gun's ability to function, a knowledgeable gunsmith should look at it.

7.    ALWAYS use only the correct ammunition for your gun. Only cartridges designed for a particular gun can be fired safely in that gun. Most guns have the ammunition type stamped on the barrel. Ammunition can be identified by information printed on the box and sometimes stamped on the cartridge. Do not shoot the gun unless you know you have the proper ammunition.

8.    ALWAYS wear eye and ear protection as appropriate. Guns are loud and the noise can cause hearing damage. The .50 BMG has a very substantial muzzle blast, which can also emit debris and hot gas that could cause eye injury. For these reasons, shooting glasses and hearing protection should be worn by all shooters and spectators.

9.    NEVER use alcohol or over-the-counter, prescription or other drugs before or while shooting. Alcohol, as well as any other substance likely to impair normal mental or physical bodily functions, must not be used before or while handling or shooting guns.

10.    ALWAYS store guns so they are not accessible to unauthorized persons. Many factors must be considered when deciding where and how to store guns. A person's particular situation will be a major part of the consideration. Dozens of gun storage devices, as well as locking devices that attach directly to the gun, are available. However, mechanical locking devices, like the mechanical safeties built into guns, can fail and should not be used as a substitute for safe gun handling and the observance of all gun safety rules.

11.    ALWAYS be aware that certain types of guns and many shooting activities require additional safety precautions.

12.    Cleaning.
a.    Regular cleaning is important in order for your gun to operate correctly and safely. Taking proper care of it will also maintain its value and extend its life. Your gun should be cleaned every time that it is used.
b.    A gun brought out of prolonged storage should also be cleaned before shooting. Accumulated moisture and dirt, or solidified grease and oil, can prevent the gun from operating properly.
c.    Before cleaning your gun, make absolutely sure that it is unloaded. The gun's action should be open during the cleaning process. Also, be sure that no ammunition is present in the cleaning area.

13.    Choice of Ammunition
a.    DO NOT USE MILIARY SURPLUS AMMUNITION. Zel Custom Manufacturing recommends in the strongest possible terms against using military surplus .50 BMG ammunition.  It will likely vary widely depending upon manufacturer, age, lot, storage method and any number of any other factors.  YOUR HEALTH AND SAFETY IS NOT WORTH THE RELATIVELY SMALL ECONOMIC SAVINGS.
b.    Reloaded Ammunition. We recommend strongly against using reloaded ammunition, and doing so will void your product warranty.  If you should, however, choose to reload, a thorough knowledge of bullets, powder, primers, brass and safety precautions is necessary and you should use only high quality new components and practice all current safety measures.  Use of reloaded ammunition voids your product warranty.
c.    750 Grain Maximum.  DO NOT USE BULLETS WEIGHNING MORE THAN 750 GRAINS.

14.    DO NOT CHANGE THE MUZZLE BRAKE.  Zel Custom Mfg. sells and installs alternative muzzle brakes that have been tested with the TactiliteTM.  Do not use any muzzle brake with the Tactilite that is from any other manufacturer.

15.    ALWAYS BE CAREFUL OF MUZZLE BLAST FROM A .50 BMG. Use extra caution on our 18.5” barrel. A very substantial amount of hot gas and debris will be blasted from the muzzle brake.  Be sure that people and objects are clear of the firing area.

16.    ALWAYS BE CERTAIN THAT THE BOLT IS COMPLETELY FORWARD AND CLOSED.  NEVER PULL THE TRIGGER IF THE BOLT AND BOLT HANDLE ARE NOT COMPLETELY CLOSED.

17.    HEALTH WARNING
a.    Do not fire this weapon if you have a weak heart, are taking medication, have osteoporosis (weak or fragile bones), a recent shoulder injury, muscle or joint disease, are susceptible to eye retinal separation, have high blood pressure or have any medical condition that may be exacerbated by the recoil of magnum weapons.  If you are uncertain, check with your doctor prior to shooting the Tactilite.
b.    With every shot of a .50 BMG, you are applying tremendous force upon your body, as with any other magnum type rifles be aware of overuse. If you start to hurt of feel discomfort stop shooting. Ignoring this warning may result in permanent muscular, joint and/or bone damage.

18.    COMPLIANCE WITH STATE AND LOCAL LAW.  The Tactilite is a firearm accessory and is not restricted by federal law. Some States and municipalities, however, prohibit or otherwise restrict your right to possess firearms and .50 BMG, in particular.  It is your responsibility to comply with your state and local laws.

State-by-State Warnings

Certain States require by law that their own specified warning notices in larger-than-normal type be conspicuously included by the manufacturer with firearms sold in that state.  Please note the following:

California:
WARNING! “Children are attracted to and can operate firearms that can cause severe injuries or death.  Prevent child access by always keeping guns locked away and unloaded when not in use.  If you keep a loaded firearm where a child obtains and improperly uses it, you may be fined or sent to prison.”

Connecticut:
“UNLAWFUL STORAGE OF A LOADED FIREARM MAY RESULT IN IMPRISONMENT OF FINE.”

Florida:
“IT IS UNLAWFUL, AND PUNISHABLE BY IMPRISONMENT AND FINE, FOR ANY ADULT TO STORE OR LEAVE A FIREARM IN ANY PLACE WHITHIN THE REACH OR EASY ACCESS OF A MINOR UNDER 18 YEARS OF AGE OR TO KNOWINGLY SELL OR OTHERWISE TRANSFER OWNERSHIP OR POSSESSION OF A FIREARM TO A MINOR OR A PERSON OF UNSOUND MIND.”

Maine:
“ENDANGERING THE WELFARE OF A CHILD IS A CRIME.  IF YOU LEAVE A FIREARM AND AMMUNITION WITHIN EASY ACCESS OF A CHILD, YOU MAY BE SUBJECT TO FINE, IMPRISONMENT OR BOTH.  KEEP FIREARMS AND AMMUNITION SEPARATE.  KEEP FIREARMS AND AMMUNITION LOCKED UP.  USE TRIGGER LOCKS.”

Maryland:
“WARNING: Children can operate firearms which may cause death or serious injury.  It is a crime to store or leave a loaded firearm in any location where an individual knew or should have known that an unsupervised minor would gain access to the firearm.  Store your firearm responsibly!”

Massachusetts:
“WARNING FROM THE MASSACHUSETTS ATTORNEY GENERAL: This device is not equipped with a device that fully blocks use by unauthorized users.  More than 200,000 firearms like this one are stolen from their owners every year in the United States.  In addition, there are more than a thousand suicides each year by younger children and teenagers who get access to firearms. Hundreds more die from accidental discharge.  It is likely that many more children sustain serious wounds, or inflict such wounds accidentally on others.  In order to limit the chance of such misuse, it is imperative that you keep this weapon locked in a secure place and take other steps necessary to limit the possibility of theft or accident.  Failure to take reasonable preventative steps may result in innocent lives being lost, and in some circumstances may result in your liability for these deaths.”
“IT IS UNLAWFUL TO STORE OR KEEP A FIREARM, RIFLE, SHOTGUN OR MACHINE GUN IN ANY PLACE UNLESS THAT WEAPON EQUIPPED WITH A TAMPER-RESISTANT SAFETY DEVICE OR IS STORED OR KEPT IN A SECURELY LOCKED CONTAINER.”

New Jersey:
“IT IS A CRIMINAL OFFENSE TO EAVE A LOADED FIREARM WITHIN EASY ACCESS OF A MINOR.”

New York City:
“THE USE OF A LOCKING DEVICE OR SAFETY LOCK IS ONLY ONE ASPECT OF RESPONSIBLE FIREARMS STORAGE.  FOR INCREASED SAFETY, FIRARMS SHOULD BE STORED UNLOADED AND LOCKED IN A LOCATION THAT IS BOTH SEPARATE FROM THEIR AMMUNITION AND INACCESIBLE TO CHILDREN AND OTHER UNAUTHORIZED PERSONS.”

North Carolina:
“IT IS UNLAWFUL TO STORE OR LEAVE A FIREARM THAT CAN BE DISCHARGED IN A MANNER THAT A REASONABLE PERSON SHOULD KNOW IS ACCESSIBLE TO A MINOR.”

Texas:
“IT IS UNLAWFUL TO STORE, TRANSPORT OR ABANDON AN UNSECURED FIREARM IN A PLACE WHERE CHILDREN ARE LIKELY TO BE AND CAN OBTAIN ACCESS TO A FIREARM.”

Wisconsin:
“IF YOU LEAVE A LOADED FIREARM WITHIN THE REACH OR EASY ACCESS OF A CHILD YOU MAY BE FINED OR IMPRISONED OR BOTH IF THE CHILD IMPROPERLY DISCHARGES, POSSESSES OR EXHIBITS THE FIREARM.”

Please check with your licensed retailer or state police for additional warnings, which may be required by local law or regulation.  Such regulations change constantly and local authorities are in the best position to advise you on such legal matters.

WARNING – ALTERATIONS
This product was designed to function properly in its original condition.  Alterations can make it unsafe.  Do not alter any part or add or substitute parts or accessories not made by Zel Custom Manufacturing.  Such alterations may void the product warranty.

WARNING - AMMUNITION
Death, serious injury and damage can result from the use of wrong ammunition, bore obstructions, powder overloads or incorrect cartridge components.

WARNING – LEAD EXPOSURE
Discharging firearms, cleaning firearms or handling ammunition may result in exposure to lead and other substances known to the State of California to cause birth defects, reproductive harm, and other serious physical injury.  Have adequate ventilation at all times.  Wash hands thoroughly after exposure.

WARNING – HANDLING
If dropped or struck with the safety “off”, any firearm may fire.  Keep chamber empty unless actually firing.  Keep the firearm pointed in a safe direction at all times.  Keep safety “on” unless actually firing.

WARNING – LOADED CHAMBER
Never rely on your memory to know if a gun is loaded.  Always visually check the chamber by retracting the bolt and examining the chamber to be sure whether it is empty or loaded.

WARNING – MALFUNCTION
Any malfunction is a signal to immediately stop using the gun until it can be determined what is wrong. In the case of a hangfire (an unexpected delay between the firearm being triggered and the initiation of the propellant), the correct procedure in this situation is to keep the weapon pointed at a safe target for sixty seconds, then remove and safely discard the round.  It is important not to immediately remove the round from the chamber, because if a hangfire has in in fact occurred, a round detonating outside of the weapon could cause serious fragmentation injury
